HCPT

Katie had a trip she’ll talk about forever!

Katie (pictured above) is eight and travelled to Lourdes with HCPT at Easter. She has cerebral palsy and gets seizures. She heard about the chance of going to Lourdes at her church. She spoke about it with her Gran, Elaine, who she lives with. Elaine explains, “ It was a big trip for a young child. But Katie loves chatting with people, making new friends, and doing new things, so I knew it would be great for her.”

“I was very anxious about her going, but I wasn’t when I got to know the people she would be going with. They were so friendly and understanding. I was reassured by the fact there were doctors and nurses in the group. I knew that if Katie did have a fit or any other problems she’d be very well looked after. It was also great that she got to meet the helpers she would go with. They had fun relaxing together. I could tell she had really connected with them even before they travelled. That made it a lot easier for me when she left for Lourdes.”

Katie enjoyed a busy week in Lourdes. Among the many highlights were a ‘pirates and princesses day’ at HCPT’s Hosanna House (her helpers had the dubious pleasure of walking the plank!), peaceful trips to the Grotto, and a big party for everyone from her local area. She particularly enjoyed a girl’s night out in the town. She had her hair and make-up done, and joined in with all the other girls playing tricks on the boys in her group. She loved all the Masses, especially the Trust Mass (where she sang the hymns with as much passion as anyone). Katie also tried out loads of different musical instruments, and had an enjoyable trip to the mountains in Gavarnie (when our picture was taken) – where she loved playing in the snow.

Katie’s trip meant so much to her. Elaine told us, “she still sings all the songs she learnt in Lourdes now, and loves watching the DVD of the trip made by the group. She even wears the woollen friendship bracelet she made with her helpers.

“It was a wonderful time for her, and for all the children who travel with HCPT. I can tell by how much she talks about Lourdes. It was a real adventure, which every child loves and needs. It’s great for any child to have something special to look back on, and to have many happy memories about a week spent in Lourdes.”
